PURPOSE: To improve shift feeling in the operating lever of an automobile and the like.

CONSTITUTION: A shift mechanism for a transmission consists of a fork shaft 2 which is moved by an operating lever, a plurality of lock grooves, 20, 21, 22 provided on the fork shaft 2, and a lock means 10 having a lock ball 11 which is engaged with the lock grooves 20, 21, 22. The lock means 10 consists of a housing 14, a housing hole 140 provided in the housing 14, a lock ball 11 housed from the bottom end part of the housing hole 140 upward in order, a coil spring 12, and a pressure regulating member 13, and a sheet 3 is interposed between the coil spring 12 and the rock ball 11.
