To provide a signal retrieval system and method for precisely detecting the position of a first signal within a second signal at the time of collation while shortening the time required for collation of the first and second signals.
This signal processing method comprises performing collation and identification of the first signal and the second signal; forming a set of sample characteristics that are typical characteristic patterns as samples from predetermined signals; calculating a sample characteristic distance that is the distance each between sample characteristics; extracting a first signal characteristic that is a characteristic of signal from the first signal; assigning a code corresponding to a sample characteristic to the first signal characteristic to take the code as a first collation characteristic; extracting a second signal characteristic that is a characteristic of signal from the second signal; assigning a code corresponding to a sample characteristic to the second signal characteristic to take this code as a second collation characteristic; calculating the distance between the first and second collation characteristics based on the sample characteristic distance; and determining the similarity of the first and second signals based on this distance.
