PURPOSE: To develop a Ti-base alloy which is reinforced with SiC, has excellent ductility at room temp. and lessens the occurrence of cracks by adjusting plasma thermal spraying conditions at the time of plasma thermal spraying of the powder of a Ti-Al-Nb alloy having a specific compsn. to an SiC strand.
CONSTITUTION: The fine powder of the Ti-base alloy having the compsn. consisting of 15wt.% Al, 21wt.% Nb and the balance Ti is thermally sprayed onto the strand for reinforcement consisting of the fibers, filaments, etc., of the SiC by using high-frequency gaseous plasma, and gaseous plasma contg. ≤6vol.%, more particularly 3vol.%, 1.5vol.% gaseous hydrogen. The powder of the thermally sprayed Ti-base alloy is finely pulverized and the specific ratio of the hydrogen is incorporated into the gaseous plasma as described above. The Ti-base powder is then thermally sprayed in a superheated state, by which the specific amt. of Al is evaporated and the structure of the thermally sprayed Ti-base alloy is changed from an α2 phase to a β phase. The SiC fiber reinforced Ti-base alloy composite material which has the excellent ductility at room temp. and lessens the occurrence of the cracks is thus obtd.
