Abstract:

PURPOSE: To improve the durability and breaking resistance of a cutting tool made of a silicon nitride-based sintered compact by limiting the heat conductivity of the sintered compact and the increase of the coefft. of stress extension to 50μm length of the rising crack of the R curve of a microcrack.
CONSTITUTION: Silicon nitride particles and a sintering aid such as MgO, ZrO2 or CeO2 are sintered to obtain a silicon nitride-based sintered compact for a cutting tool. The heat conductivity of this sintered compact is regulated to ≥35W/m.k and the increase of the coefft. of stress extension to 50μm length of the rising crack of the R curve of a microcrack is regulated to ≥1MPam0.5. When a cutting tool is made of the resulting sintered compact, it is excellent in resistance to chipping and breaking at the time of rough-cutting a casting.
