PURPOSE: To provide the photosensitive material containing the novel DIR coupler to be allowed by coupling with the oxidation product of a color developing agent to release a dye sufficiently fast and not polluting a development processing solution, and superior in sharpness and color reproduction performance and sensitivity.

CONSTITUTION: At least one of hydrophilic colloidal layers formed on a support contains the compound represented by formula I in which R1 is H or an aliphatic, aromatic, or heterocyclic group; R2 is an organic residue; each of X and Y is, independently,-N= or the like; R2 is H, halogen, cyano, nitro, amino, acyl, acylamino, carbamoyl, carbamoylamino, or the like; and Z is an atomic group to be allowed to release to be a development inhibitor or its precursor by coupling of this compound with the oxidation product of an aromatic primary amine color developing agent, and this is decomposed into a compound substantially not affecting photographic performance when it has flown out into the color developing solution after being released.
