Abstract:
PURPOSE:To easily obtain the title single crystal capable of oscillating variable- wavelength laser by occupying a specified amt. of aluminum with trivalent titanium in the beryllium aluminate single crystal having a chrysoberyl structure. CONSTITUTION:A material contg. about 1/1-1/0.95 molar ratio of beryllium oxide and aluminum oxide is used as the essential component, and titanium oxide is added and mixed so that 0.025-0.75% of the aluminum site in the single crystal is occupied by trivalent titanium. The mixed powder is packed in a rubber tube, the inside of the tube is evacuated, and the powder is press- formed at about 1-2t/cm<2> hydrostatic pressure. The compact is kept at about 1,600-1,800 deg.C by an electric furnace in a nonoxidizing gas atmosphere for 1-5hr, and sintered. The a beryllium aluminate single crystal having a chrystoberyl structure and wherein trivalent titanium is dissolved is grown at about 0.5-3.0mm/hr growth rate by a condensed-light heating floating zone process in a nonoxidizing gas atmosphere.
