To provide a single mode optical fiber that has a mode field diameter large enough to fully reduce a power density while light guiding in a single mode is secured and that excels both in beam quality and power resistance.
The single mode optical fiber has a core provided with a nearly uniform refractive index profile and a clad installed in a manner surrounding the core and provided with a lower refractive index than the core. The optical fiber is characterized in that the core has a specific refractive index difference of ≤0.15% and a diameter of ≥10 μm, that the mode field diameter is ≥12 μm in the wavelength in use, and that the cut-off wavelength is equal to or less than the wavelength in use even with the line length of 1 m or less. This single mode optical fiber is used for guiding high power light of ≥1W.
