To provide a single plate type color display, capable of displaying a color image of high quality, without generating color breakup as in a field sequential system, while dimensionally reducing display configuration and lowering a manufacturing cost.
This single plate type color display modulates lights in response to images for a red color, a green color and a blue color, by one sheet of a space light modulating element 1, and composes the modulated lights to conduct color display. In the color display, illumination lights R, G, B are incident, at incident angles different from each other, into respective areas where the light modulation is carried out in response to the images for the respective colors in the space light modulating element 1, and the respective modulated lights through the space light modulating element 1 are made incident into a projection optical system 2, while at least two optical paths for the modulated lights are bent in the vicinity of the first convergence point A, in the projection optical system 2, and the respective modulated lights are composed overlappedly in an image focusing face 103, to provide the color image.
