PURPOSE: To manufacture a sliding material having an excellent mechanical characteristic and a wear resistance by adding the specific rate of carbon powder to short fibers formed with the wire cutting method under the specific condition, and executing pressurized-forming under the specific condition, heating and sintering.
CONSTITUTION: For example, a wire rod composed of low Mn steel having about 0.1-0.15 % C, about 0.05-0.1 % Si, about 0.9-1.5 % Mn, is cut with the wire cutting method to make iron-made long fiber having ≤100 μ expressed in term of diameter and cut to pieces to make the short fibers having 30-100 aspect ratio. The carbon powder is added to this short fibers at 3-10 wt.% and also if necessary, iron powder is added and mixed at 7 wt.% and packed in a die for press-forming or rubber mold for CIP process at uniform density. Successively, the pressurized-forming is executed under pressurized force of 8-12 ton/cm2 in the case of the press-forming or 3.5-7 ton/cm2 in the case of the CIP process and this is heated and sintered under reducing atmosphere. In this way, the sliding material being suitable to a sliding plate for pantograph in an electric train is obtd.
