To provide a sliding member manufacturing method for manufacturing sliding components having characteristics such as excellent wear resistance, seizure resistance, fitness with a mating member, and fatigue resistance, while suppressing manufacturing cost and also satisfying a request for high accuracy in the sliding components.
The sliding member manufacturing method includes a graphitization heat treatment process and a cutting process. In the graphitization heat treatment process, carbon steel base material is graphitization-heat-treated under an atmosphere of gas containing at least one gas of oxygen and steam. In the cutting process, a part or all of the surface layer part of the carbon steel base material is cut to the maximum decarburization depth or more to manufacture the desired sliding components 17, 23, 24, 26, 39, 60.
