PURPOSE: To manufacture a sliding shaft having superior sliding properties by forming a layer of an Al-Cu type intermetallic compound on the sliding part of a sliding shaft made of Al or a Al alloy so as to provide wear resistance to the sliding part.
CONSTITUTION: Al or Al alloy stock is plastically worked into a shaft, cuprous chloride powder is stuck to the sliding part of the shaft and the shaft is heat treated to cause a substitution reaction with Al. The shaft may be coated with Cu or a Cu alloy by plating or thermal spraying before the heat treatment. Thus, a layer of a hard Al-Cu type intermetallic compound is formed on the sliding part of the Al or Al alloy shaft and a lightweight sliding shaft having superior sliding characteristics can be manufactured.
