To provide a smoothing tool efficiently removing waviness, etc. on the surface of a workpiece in a short period of time by selectively removing only projecting parts of rugged parts such as waviness, carved lines or cracks existing on the surface of the workpiece.

This tool is mounted on a machining machine and carries out polishing by making polishing members 4 and 5 copying the surface shape of the workpiece 6 abut on the workpiece 6, while rotating the polishing members 4 and 5. The tool has a rotary shaft 1 mounted on the machining machine. Elastic member 2 and the polishing members 4 and 5 following the surface shape of the workpiece 6 are provided at one end side of the rotary shaft 1. A thin plate member 3 is interposed between the elastic member 2 and the polishing members 4 and 5. Preferably, the thin plate member 3 is made of a metal material or a resin material. More preferably, the thin plate member 3 is made of a metal plate having thickness of about 0.01 to 0.05 mm or a resin plate having thickness of about 0.05 to 0.20 mm.
