To provide a snow melting system which is installed on a roof of a structure, which curbs the cost of electric power necessary for a heater and the like and which curbs an installation cost when installed in a building, and a method for controlling the snow melting system.

A snow melting system includes a flat plate-like snow melting module installed on a top surface of a roof, an accumulated snow sensor for detecting an accumulated snow height as the height of snow accumulated on the snow melting module, and a control device. When the snow accumulated to a height greater than the preset accumulated snow height is detected on the snow melting module by the accumulated snow sensor, a heater is controlled to be turned on. When the accumulated snow sensor detects that the height of the snow becomes equal to/less than the preset accumulated snow height, the heater is controlled to be turned off.
