To provide a solid detection apparatus which is capable of detecting solids present around a vehicle without mounting an ultrasonic sensor, and notifying a driver thereof.
A camera is mounted on a vehicle to image the periphery. Two images captured at different points of time are converted into images in a direction of bird's eye view, respectively. On the basis of the two images obtained by conversion, moving distances of subjects photographed in pixels in the image with movement of the vehicle, are calculated and a subject photographed in a portion of a large moving distance is detected as a solid. Furthermore, when a solid is detected, a height of the solid is calculated. If the calculated height is greater than a predetermined height, a notification is performed by outputting a voice message from a speaker.
