Abstract:
To estimate a SOx quantity included in exhaust gas from a detected NOx storage quantity by detecting a NOx storage capacity of a NOx storage catalyst.
A small SOx storage catalyst 16 having a cross section smaller than a cross section of an engine exhaust passage and in which a part of the exhaust gas flowing in the engine exhaust passage flows is arranged in the engine exhaust passage. The small SOx storage catalyst 16 is composed of the NOx storage catalyst, and the NOx storage capacity of the NOx storage catalyst is detected, and the SOx quantity included in the exhaust gas is estimated from the detected NOx storage quantity.
