Abstract:

To provide a spark ignition type internal combustion engine materializing an actual compression ratio according to octane number.

This engine is provided with a variable compression ratio mechanism A capable of changing a mechanical compression ratio, and a variable valve timing mechanism B capable of controlling valve close timing of an intake valve 7. The mechanical compression ratio is maintained at the maximum mechanical compression ratio at an engine light load operation side, and is gradually decreased as the engine load gets higher at an engine heavy load operation side. An actual compression-ratio is increased as the octane number of fuel supplied into a combustion chamber 5 gets higher.
