PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spatial light modulator for displaying a high-contrast stereoscopic image of holography.SOLUTION: A spatial light modulator 1 modulates incident light by the magneto-optic effect of a light modulation element 30 having at least a magnetization fixed layer 31 in which the direction of magnetization is fixed in one direction, a magnetization free layer 33 in which the direction of magnetization can be rotated more easily than for the magnetization fixed layer 31, and an intermediate layer 32 in between the magnetization fixed layer 31 and the magnetization free layer 33. The spatial light modulator 1 comprises a layer in which a plurality of light modulation elements 30 are two-dimensionally arrayed and which is provided with an insulator 40 between the light modulation elements 30, an inter-element magnetic layer 70 being a region corresponding to between one and other light modulation elements 30 and provided so as to cover one light incident side surface of the insulator 40, and an insulation layer 42 for insulating between the light modulation elements 30 and the inter-element magnetic layer 70, the inter-element magnetic layer 70 having its magnetization direction fixed in one direction.
