PURPOSE: To provide the speech synthesizer which is compact and convenient to carry.

CONSTITUTION: This device has a language processing part 1 for speech synthesis (main device), an input part 2 which can easily be connected to and disconnected to it, an input information storage part 3 stored with information in a halfway stage of speech synthesis processing, and a speech synthesizing part 4 (portable device); and the speech synthesis processing is performed by the language processing part 1 (main device) to some extent and the intermediate result is stored in the input information storage part 3 through the input part 2. Then the main portable device is disconnected and carried and a speech can be synthesized according to the intermediate result. Further, this device is equipped with a function for enabling random access to a text, a display function, and an external communicating function, and a multilingual speech synthesizing function.
