Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a spherical alkali metal hexatitanate powder which is useful as a friction material, filler of a resin or coating material, or the like.
SOLUTION: This powder consists of spherical particles in which crystal grains of an alkali metal hexatitanate (M2Ti6O13 wherein M is an alkali metal) are bonded to each other through an alkali metal silicate (M2SiO3) and the molar ratio of (M2Ti6O13)/(M2SiO3) is 1/0.02 to 1/0.5. Accordingly, the alkali metal hexatitanate crystal grains which are constituents of the spherical particles, have high bond strength to each other and high breaking strength. In this production, a powdery titanium compound, a powdery alkali metal compound and a powdery silicon compound are mixed in ratios enough to provide TiO2/M2O/SiO2 molar ratios of 6/(1+x)/x (wherein x is 0.02 to 0.5) to obtain a powdery mixture and then, the powdery mixture is granulated into granules and thereafter, the granules are subjected to calcination treatment at 700 to 1,300°C to produce the objective powder.
