To obtain new compounds useful as pharmaceuticals, in particular histone deacetylase(HDAC) inhibitors.
The new compounds, i.e., new azumamides or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof as components extracted from Mycale izuensis as a kind of sponge, have each HDAC inhibitory activity and also cell proliferation inhibitory activity for human cancer cells, therefore are useful in treating or ameliorating diseases or palhemas associated with histone acetylation, in particular tumor or cell proliferation-related diseases. These cell prolifration-related diseases include infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases and dermatoses. In particular, since having high cell proliferation inhibitory activity against human cancer cells, the new compounds are useful as antitumor agents (e.g. medicaments for colon cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, prostatic cancer, cancer of the cervix uteri, cerebral tumor, leukemia).
