To obtain a polyamic ester random copolymer useful as a precursor for the production of a poly(imide amic ester) and/or a polyimide by reacting a tetracarboxylic dianhydride with a diamine.
A tetracarboxylic acid of formula IV is reacted with a diamine of formula V to obtain a polyamic acid of formula VI. This compound is partially esterified with an alkyl halide represented by RX (X is Cl, Br or I) to obtain a polyamic ester random copolymer of formula I (wherein Ar is at least one group selected from formula II; Ar' is at least one group selected from formula III; R is CH3, CH2CH3, CH(CH3)2, (CH2)2CH3, (CH2)3CH3, C(CH3)3 or CH2CH(CH3)2; and m and n are each 0-1; provided that the total content of the amic acid groups (COOH) and amic ester groups (COOR) contained in the repeating units are 0.0 to 0.7 and 1.0 to 0.3, respectively, when l+m+n=1).
