Abstract:
Prodn. of steel from primary material in the form of scrap, sponge iron or other metallic, iron-bearing substances, comprises introducing into a converter having tuyenes in its melting zone, a column of the material in solid form and melting and superheating by burning fuel with oxygen flowing in counter current. Specifically, the charge is introduced into the converter in the side wall zone where the burners are placed above the tuyenes, so that the material is melted by the burners, when a liquid melt is formed, finely divided carbon and oxygen are injected separately into the melt via the tuyenes beneath the liquid surface. Formation of an uncontrollable foam is avoided and the need to add crude liquid cast iron is obviated.
