PURPOSE: To provide water-soluble sterically hindered phenols useful for stabilizing optically and thermally polyamide fiber materials.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I [wherein R represents H, a halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy; R1 and R2 are each H, methyl or t-butyl (the totalnumber of carbons are 2 or more); R3 represents H or a substitutable alkyl; X represents an alkylene, oxalkylene or thialkylen; V represents a group of formula II or III (wherein R4 is R; R5 and R6 are each R, amino, mono- or di-lower alkylamino, phenoxy, phenylamino or -phenyl-lower alkylamino; (n) is 0 or 1); M represents H, an alkaline (earth) metal, ammonium, an organic ammonium radical], preferably a compound of formula VI (wherein R7 and R8 are each methyl or t-butyl; R9 represents H or a lower alkyl; X1 represents a lower alkylene; M represents H or Na), is obtained by reacting 1 mole of a compound of formula IV (wherein Hal represents a halogen) with 1 mole of a compound of formula V.
