Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide novel stilbene-based materials which do not exhibit irreversible photochemical reaction and are useful in preparing polymers with the use of electromagnetic wave.
CONSTITUTION: Novel stilbene-based materials are represented by formula I (wherein R1-R3 are each H, a halogen, hydroxyl, nitro, cyano or the like; R4 is H, a halogen, nitro, cyano or the like; and R5 is a halogen, hydroxyl, nitro, cyano or the like) and include, e.g. 5-allyloxy-2,2-dimethyl-1-(phenyl)methylene- indane. The compounds of formula I can be obtained, e.g. by alkylating a 1- indanone of formula II with an alkyl halide, then reacting the alkylated product with a substituted or non-substituted benzylmagnesium halide (e.g. a compound of formula III or the like) by Grignard reaction and successively treating the resulting product in an acidic condition. The compounds of formula I can be linked with a desired polymer skeleton by exchanging the monovalent groups R1-R5 in formula I for divalent organic groups. The polymer skeletons include, e.g. an acrylate, a methacrylate and a chloroacrylate.
