PURPOSE: To provide a still picture display device for displaying an arbitrary region of a picture larger than a display region of a display device.

CONSTITUTION: This device is provided with a code memory 14 storing a compressed code 12 in which a marker code is inserted and compressed so that reference points from which a picture is read out are arranged in a lattice state and the reference points can be discriminated with a unit of byte, an address memory 24 storing an address of the code memory 14 in which the marker code is stored, a means 42 successively reading out a compressed code in a section decided depending on a read out picture size from an arbitrary address held in the address memory 24, when a picture is read out from the code memory 14, and a means 50 setting continuously a section from which a picture is read out.
