Abstract:
PURPOSE: To enhance running performance on an icy road surface and on a normal read surface by forming recesses in the buttress portion of a shoulder portion at intervals along the circumferential direction of the tire, and specifying the configuration and dimensions of each recess.
CONSTITUTION: In a studless tire the tread 1 of which comprises blocks formed by longitudinal and horizontal grooves, recesses 15 are formed in the buttress portion 12 of a shoulder portion. In the cross section of the tire when it is filled with internal pressure, the area (a) of a triangle formed by a vertical line passing the end 1a of the tread, the visible outline SL of the buttress portion 12, and a straight line HL at a distance A of one-fourth the height H of the tire from a straight line parallel to an axis of rotation passing the outer peripheral end OL of the tire, the area (b) of each recess 15, the open area (c) of each recess 15, and the area (d) of the buttress portion 12 are such that (b)/(a)=0.05-0.15, (c)/(d)=0.1-0.3. The angle θ between the vertical line VL passing the end 1a of the tread and the visible outline SL of the buttress portion 12 is set to 10-40°.
