PURPOSE: To obtain a new readily producible substituted benzenecarbonyl chloride derivative useful as an intermediate for medicines and agrochemicals, e.g. an N-acyl-N-phenyltetrahydrophthalamic acid derivative having herbicidal activities.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I [Y is a halogen; R1 is a group of the formula CHR5CO2R6 (R5 is H or a lower alkyl; R6 is a lower alkyl)], e.g. 4-chloro-2-fluoro-5-methoxycarbonylmethylthiobenzoyl chloride. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting and chlorinating (A) a compound of formula II (R4 is a lower alkyl) with (C) a chlorinating agent such as thionyl chloride, phosphorus pentachloride or phosgene in the presence (or absence) of (B) an organic solvent such as dichloroethane or toluene. Furthermore, the amount of the component (C) used in obtaining the objective compound is preferably 1.0-50 equiv. based on 1 equiv. component (A). The reaction is carried out at 0-180°C for 30min to 24hr.
