PURPOSE: To provide the new compounds each of which is effective in increasing high density lipoprotein concn. in blood serum and useful for the prophylaxis and treatment of atherosclerosis, etc.
CONSTITUTION: The new compounds are those represented by the formula I [R1 is H, a 1-3C alkyl, trifluoromethyl, 1-3C alkoxy group or the like; each of R2 and R3 is H, a 1-3C alkyl, a 1-2C alkoxy, trifluoromethyl group or the like; A and B are joined together to form a group represented by the formula II (R4 is a substituted 1-3C alkyl group or the like; R5 is a hydroxyl group; R6 is H or the like; and R7 is H or a 1-2C alkyl group), or A is H and B is a group represented by the formula III (R'7 is H or 1-2C alkyl group; and R10 is a 1-3C alkyl, 2-3C alkenyl group or the like); and R8 is H, a 1-3C alkyl, trifluoromethyl group or the like], such as 3-methyl-5-phenyl-5H-thiazolo[2,3- b]quinazoline. Such a compound represented by the formula I is prepared, e.g. by reacting a compound represented by the formula IV with a compound represented by the formula V (X' is a reactive group).
