To provide a sucking apparatus capable of efficiently sucking a sheet type recording medium to a medium arrangement plate while suppressing increases in size and manufacturing cost of the apparatus, and to provide an image scanner.
The apparatus is equipped with the medium arrangement plate where a plurality of through holes are bored, two masks which are arranged on the reverse side of the medium arrangement plate to cover the through holes of the medium arrangement plate each except an area having at least one corner, a holding part which holds the masks so that a rectangular area is left by putting areas that the masks doe not cover one over the other, a movement part which moves the two masks so that the left rectangular area which are not covered with the two masks varies in size, and a suction part which sucks air from the reverse side through the through hole of the left rectangular area that the two mask do not cover to suck the recording medium arranged on the medium arrangement plate to the medium arrangement plate.
