To obtain a new sulfated galactose compound which is recognized by human influenza virus and/or aids virus, and can be used as an alternative capturing material to trisaccharide-based one.
This compound is expressed by the formula [wherein, R5 and R6 are each H, an acyl, or the like; Y is benzyloxy, allylbenzyloxy, or the like; M is H, an alkali metal, or the like]. The compound of the formula is obtained e.g. by conducting reflux dehydration of 1 mol nitrophenylgalactose along with pref. 1-3 mol bis(tributyltin) oxide in dried (benzene/tetrahydrofuran), by reacting the product with pref. 3-4 mol sulfating agent (e.g. trimethylamine- sulfur trioxide complex) for 30 min-5 h. at 0-80°C to combine sulfate groups with the above product at 3- and 6-sites at the same time. The group M in the resultant product is trimethylamino group and, if needed, can be replaced with an alkali metal by the treatment of the product with an Na+-type ion- exchange resin.
