To effectively obtain a sulfide compound industrially useful as an antioxidant for a polymer, a metal surface detergent, a metal surface treating agent, a rust preventive, an extreme-pressure additive, etc.
This sulfide compound is shown by formula I (R is a 2-8C hydrocarbon bifunctional group; one of X1 and X2 is CONR1R2 and the other is COR3; R1 and R2 are each independently H or a 1-4C hydrocarbon; R3 is H, ammonium, etc.) such as 2-[(2-hydroxyethyl)thio]-3-carbamoylpropionic acid. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting 1mol of a mercaptoalcohol of the formula, HO-R-SH (e.g. 2-mercaptoethanol) with preferably 0.8-1.5mol of a compound of formula II (R4 is H or a 1-18C hydrocarbon) in the presence of at least one of an amide group-containing compound (e.g. formamide), a sulfoxide group- containing compound (e.g. dimethyl sulfoxide) and a ureylene group-containing compound (N,N-dimethylimidazolidinone).
