To provide a super calender which accomplishes the formation of high temperature soft nip portions to respond to demands for paper having excellent printing suitability, high smoothness and high gloss.
This super calender is characterized by perpendicularly alternately disposing the suitable number of elastic rolls 21 and the suitable number of metal rolls 22 and disposing heating means capable of locally heating the surfaces of the metal rolls 22 from the outside of the metal rolls 22 for a part of the metal rolls 22. The other metal rolls 22 are heat rolls through which a heat medium is flowed. The elastic rolls 21 are constituted of resin rolls, and the resin rolls 21 are partially continuously disposed to form reverse nip portions 23f. A pressure device 27 is disposed for the uppermost top roll 24 to generate and adjust the pressure of the nip portion formed with the rolls 21, 22. Further, end-cooling means for cooling the ends of the elastic rolls 21 are disposed.
