Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide surface coating member suitable for employing as cutting tool and the like, which can be formed by PVD method on the surface of base metal under the condition that the characteristics of the base metal are maintained and has rigid film having not only wear resistance but also toughness.
CONSTITUTION: The rigid film provided on the surface of base metal is produced by continuously changing composition made of the nitride, oxide, carbide, carbonitride or boride of two or more kinds of elements selected from the group consisting of group IVa, Va and VIa metal elements and A and Si elements by the period of 0.4-50nm in the combination as indicated in the figure so as to form the film having the whole thickness of 0.5-10μm. The film has large strain and displays excellent wear resistance and toughness.
