Abstract:

To provide a method of forming a water repellent or oil repellent coating on a substrate.

A method of coating a surface with a polymer layer comprises exposing the surface to a pulsed plasma comprising a monomeric saturated organic compound, the compound comprises an optionally substituted alkyl chain of at least 5 carbon atoms optionally interposed with a heteroatom, such as a halo substituted alkane; so as to form an oil or water repellent coating on the substrate. Substrates such as fabrics obtained by this process are also claimed.
