Abstract:

PURPOSE: To improve the anti-wear quality by covering the surface of an endmill made of the cemented carbide of a tungsten carbide group with a hard cover layer such as a compound carbide solid solution body of Ti and Al formed by ion plating.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of an endmill composed of the cemented carbide of a tungsten carbide group is covered with a hard cover layer whose average layer thickness is less than 0.5-4μm and which consists of a single layer of one kind out of a compound carbide solid solution body of Ti and Al a compound nitride solid solution body and a compound carbonitride solid solution body, formed by ion plating or plural layers of more than two kinds. By providing such a hard cover layer like this, heat resistance, high temperature hardness and the quality of heat-resisting plasticity deformation can be improved much more by means of the solid solution of Al, and together with the improvement of the quality of close sticking to the endmill surface by means of ion plating, an excellent anti-wear quality at the time of cutting can be obtained, and the extension of cutting life can be realized.
