To incorporate surface eroding polymers in barbed sutures whose properties can provide necessary strength and appropriate mass loss, enabling the wound healing process.

There are provided: barbed sutures for surgery consisting of a surface eroding material and barbed sutures having increased decomposition speed; and a process including steps of: contacting at least one hydrophobic core with at least one α-hydroxy acid ester to form at least one macromer; contacting the at least one macromer with at least one diacid spacer to form a surface eroding material; and forming the suture from the surface eroding material. The suture includes an elongate body with a proximal end and a distal end.
