PURPOSE: To provide a surface light source element which is thin and by which condensed light can be easily obtained in a direction viewed by a user as the backlighting of a display device whose angle of visibility is small.
CONSTITUTION: This surface light source element is constituted of a first element 50 in which a side end 11 is an incident surface and a surface crossing at a right angle with the side end 11 is a light emitting surface, a reflecting surface 13 disposed to face oppositely to the opposite surface of the light emitting surface of the element 50, a second element 51 provided with the incident surface on which light outgoing from the element 50 is made incident and the light emitting surface 32 making the light exit in a specified direction, and a light source 14 arranged to face oppositely to the incident surface of the element 50. Many lens units 16 reflecting light in a specified direction crossing at a right angle with a light advancing direction are provided on the opposite surface of the light emitting surface of the element 50. Many prism units 40 reflecting light made incident from at least one prism surface at the other prism surface are formed on the incident surface of the element 51.
