Title:
SWITCHABLE LIQUID CRYSTAL DEVICE AND ITS PRODUCTION
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3304054
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease temp. dependence of the pitch and to enable switching by forming a cell containing a helical polymer network and a substantially non-chiral liquid crystal and providing the cell with a switching means.
SOLUTION: The cell controlled by orienting films 3, 6 contains a helical polymer network/nematic liquid crystal composite material. Namely, a precursor material containing a chiral compd. is mixed with a nonchiral nematic liquid crystal material, photopolymn. inhibitor and photopolymn. initiator, precursor material. Since the precursor material shows extremely strong helical twisting force, selective reflection can be produced in the visible ray spectrum by adding the precursor material by only several wt.% to the nonchiral nematic liquid crystal material. After the cell is filled with the mixture, the precursor material is polymerized, for example, by irradiation of UV rays, to form the helical polymer network 9. Therefore, the nonchiral nematic liquid crystal material shows a helical twist state when no electric field is applied.
