To obtain a syndiotactic polyolefin having a high molecular weight, a narrow distribution of molecular weight and an extremely high syndiotatic index by (co)polymerizing an olefin in the presence of a catalyst containing a specific transition metal component.
An olefin represented by the formula Ra-CH=CHRb (Ra and Rb are each H or a 1-28C alkyl) is (co)polymerized in a solution state or a suspension state or in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising (A) a transition metal component comprising a metallocene compound represented by formula I (M1 is Ti, Zr or the like; R1 and R2 are each H, a halogen or the like; R3 and R4 are each a mutually different mononuclear or polynuclear hydrocarbon, with the proviso that either one of R3 and R4 is 9- fluorenyl; R5 is Sn, CO or the like) and (B) an aluminoxane represented by formula II [R9 is phenyl, benzyl or the like; (n) is 2-50] and/or formula III at-60 to +200°C under 0.5-100 bar. (Diphenylmethylene) (9-fluorenyl) (cyclopentadieny) zirconium dichloride, or the like, are preferred as the compound represented by formula I.
