Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparation of an overbased magnesium sulfonate using MgO of any grade among light-burned, hard-burned or dead-burned interchangeably or with mixtures of different grades.SOLUTION: A method for preparation of an overbased magnesium sulfonate of present invention comprises: (A) preparing a mixture of sulfonic acid or salt thereof, a magnesium oxide, water, a C-Calkanol, a hydrocarbon solvent and a combination of first and second promoters, where the first promoter is a polyisobutene succinic anhydride having a molecular weight (Mw) of 500-1500 g/mol and the second promoter is a salicylic acid; and (B) carbonating the mixture with an acidic gas to form the overbased magnesium sulfonate.SELECTED DRAWING: None
