PURPOSE: To optimize the transmission efficiency by calculating a transmission parameter, which maximizes the effective transmission speed, in accordance with the state of a communication line to set the length of a frame in a communication controller of a computer network.
CONSTITUTION: A transmission data processing part 53 and a reception data processing part 56 are controlled by a main control part 54 of a communication controller 4 to supply a data transmission time and a reception response time corresponding to this data to a transmission frame length calculating part 55. The calculating part 55 calculates the information frame length parameter, which maximizes the effective transmission speed, in accordance with the difference between both times and sets the frame length. Variable length information frames are transmitted in this manner to optimize the transmission efficiency.
