The invention relates to a device and method for starting an internal combustion engine for a motor vehicle, whereby an electric motor (1) is assigned to the internal combustion engine and operated like a starter/generator. During starting, the electric motor (1) is supplied with a voltage that results from adding or subtracting the voltages applied to a first and to a second energy store (3, 4).
