PURPOSE: To pacify an irritable temper of a party subjected to holding effectively by devising the telephone set such that the volume and the kind of a holding tone is selected by the operation of a dial button of the party subjected to holding.

CONSTITUTION: When a holding button 9 is depressed, a talking/holding changeover circuit 2 disconnects a handphone set 1 from a line and connects a line transformer 3 to the line. Moreover, a guide message 5 informs it in voice to a party subjected to holding that the telephone set with holding function has a feature of adjusting the tone volume of the holding tone. When the party subjected to holding operates a dial button according to a guide message, a tone volume adjustment circuit 8 is controlled.
