To make it possible to objectively evaluate, compare and verify the absorption characteristic of a specimen which can not be confirmed by visual observation, touch or the like.
A colored test liquid is supplied to the absorption face 2u of a specimen 2 immobilized on a sample stand 3 from the upper side by a pipette 4, and an area region including the supply region is imaged by a CCD camera 5, and its animation image signal is taken into a signal processing device 6. Prescribed thresholds S1, S2, S3 smaller than a reference threshold are set relative to the reference threshold equal to the brightness value of an image in the liquid unabsorbed state on the absorption face, and binarization processing of an original image signal is carried out based on the thresholds S1, S2, S3, to thereby generate binary images for showing an existing region and a non-existing region of the test liquid in a prescribed absorption process. The change with time of the area of the liquid existing region is acquired based on the binary images, and the absorption characteristic of the specimen is determined by the change with time or a characteristic value determined based thereon.
