To provide a thermal decomposition method capable of continuously and stably performing thermal decomposition of an acrylic resin for a long period of time under an inert gas atmosphere by a fluidized bed.
The thermal decomposition method for the acrylic resin includes: a step (1) of fluidizing a fluidization medium by continuously feeding a fluidized gas containing an inert gas to a decomposition tank filled with the fluidization medium and forming the fluidized bed; a step (2) of continuously feeding the acrylic resin to the fluidized bed by a screw feeder to perform thermal decomposition, cooling the gaseous decomposition product generated by the thermal decomposition and recovering it as a liquid; and a step (3) of continuously discharging the fluidization medium in the decomposition tank, introducing it to a heating apparatus and heating it, and thereafter continuously feeding it to the decomposition tank. At feeding of the acrylic resin, a resin filling ratio at a position contacted with an inner wall of the decomposition tank of a screw distal end part of the screw feeder is 55% or less and a resin feeding linear speed at the position is 2.0 m/min or higher.
