PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer excellent in tone reproduction.SOLUTION: The thermal printer is provided that comprises: a plurality of heat generating elements which generate heat by being applied with energy; energy applying means for applying energy to the heat generating elements; memory means for memorizing a gradation table in which energy for each gradation is set on the basis of the relationship between the reflectivity of an image and an energy to be applied to the heat generating element; and control means for transferring the control data according to the gradation of a printing image, to the energy applying means thereby to control the energy which is applied by the energy applying means to the heat generating element.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
