To provide a thermal transfer printing method which can further reduce the time to perform thermal transfer printing for forming image areas on a printing paper and forming image area protective layers on the image areas.
In the thermal transfer printing method, a printing paper 2 is first unrolled from a printing paper roll 3, and the printing paper 2 is delivered. Next, yellow, magenta, and cyan are sublimated and transferred on the printing paper 2 by a first heating means 10 using an ink ribbon 14 having a yellow layer 15, a magenta layer 16, and a cyan layer 17 to successively form a plurality of image areas 6 having images. Next, a cutting means 19 is used to cut the printing paper 2 to produce individual printing papers 4a and 4b on the printing paper 2, which are transported to the side of a second heating means 20. Next, an image area protective ribbon 24 having an image area protective film 25 is used to thermally transfer the image area protective film 25 by the second heating means 20 on the image areas 6 formed in the individual printing papers 4a and 4b, thus forming the image area protective layers 24.
