PURPOSE: To prevent a thermal transfer sheet from becoming crimped by providing a drive roller consisting of an inner diameter which is smaller than an outer diameter forward and/or backward of a recording part and rotating this drive roller at a higher peripheral speed than the transport speed of the thermal transfer sheet.
CONSTITUTION: A drive roller 10 is provided forward and/or backward of a recording part. An ink ribbon is oriented upward in its transport direction by the drive roller, then is wound around a used ink ribbon roll 4. The used ink ribbon roll 4 is driven through a slip mechanism. The shape of the drive roller 10 in the axial direction is such that the inner diameter is smaller than the outer diameter. If the drive roller of this shape is rotated in such a manner that its peripheral speed is higher than the transport speed of the ink ribbon, a force which causes the both ends of the ink ribbon to be oriented outwardly acts on the ink ribbon, resulting in the ink ribbon becoming tense. Thus the generation of crimps on the thermal transfer sheet can be prevented.
