Title:
THERMALLY POLYMERIZED DICYCLOPENTADIENE/VINYL AROMATIC RESIN
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP2004359964
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

To provide a thermally polymerized resin having a relatively low molecular weight and a relatively high softening point, which is produced using a low-cost DCPD feed stock as a base and does not substantially change with time in a reactor.

The method for producing a hydrocarbon resin comprises (1) thermally copolymerizing a mixture consisting essentially of (a) an about 40 wt.% to 90 wt.% (based on total monomers) cyclic diolefin component comprising at least about 50 wt.% dicyclopentadiene, and (b) an about 60 wt.% to 10 wt.% (based on total monomers) specified vinyl aromatic component; and (2) recovering a product having a ring and ball softening point ranging from about 70°C to about 150°C, a Z-average molecular weight of about 4,000 or lower, a weight average molecular weight of about 2,500 or lower, and a polydispersity of about 3.0 or lower. Hydrogenation of this resin produces light colored, thermally stable products that are useful as tackifiers in adhesives.
