Title:
THERMO-OPTIC EFFECT TYPE LIGHT ATTENUATOR
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3835205
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small thermo-optic effect type light attenuator which is driven by absolute temperature, having proper temperature efficiency and does not have stress distribution over the entire circuit.
SOLUTION: At least one stage of symmetrical Mach-Zehnder circuit C, which branches and recombines inputted light, is formed on a quartz substrate 2 to form an optical circuit. The thermo-optic effect type light attenuator 1 adjusts an optical output, by heating two arms 6a and 6b of each Mach-Zehnder circuit C by a heater 8. The two arms 6a and 6b are formed of different materials, in which refractive indices are changed in a reverse direction with each other with temperatures. The optical output is adjusted by the absolute quantity of a temperature applied on the two arms 6a and 6b.
